Suspended Scaffold Training

Frequently Asked
Questions
What course do we
recommend?
For those who need training in frame,
tube & coupler, and system scaffolds (and other supported), the three
one day modules are recommended. For those who need an overview of
suspended scaffolds in addition to frame, tube & coupler, and system
scaffolds, the Four Day course is recommended.
What is the minimum
to cover the mandatory OSHA training requirements?
The topics OSHA recommends in 1926.454
and Appendix D are covered in the first module- our Basic "Competent
Person/Scaffold Builder" course (one day).
How much
"hands-on" training is required by OSHA?
OSHA does not mandate a specific amount.
The hands on should be custom tailored for each company according to the
employees’ experience, types of scaffolds to be used, and scope of
anticipated work. The are 25 different types of scaffolds covered by
1926.452, so the training should be specific to the type used. For
example, one employer might have experienced workers who erect only
frame scaffolds up to three levels, then call a scaffold company to
erect larger scaffolds. The amount of hands on training should reflect
that limited scope. Another employer might use frame, tube & clamp, and
system on larger scaffolds. The amount of hands on should then reflect
that scope. Call to discuss.
What is the 8 hour
"Personal Fall Arrest Systems" course?
OSHA requires training for all users of
personal fall arrest systems. This course covers the use of harnesses,
lanyards, and anchorages. Various manufacturers’ equipment is discussed,
as well as applicable portions of Subpart M.
What is the OSHA
10 hour?
OSHA, through the OSHA Training
Institute, offers a 10 hour and 30 hour safety course on the
regulations. Instructors must be OSHA authorized and have attended
Trainer courses. These courses cover a variety of OSHA topics such as an
Introduction to OSHA, electrical safety, fire safety, hazcom, fall
protection, ladders, cranes, rigging, etc. The 10 hour is an excellent
introduction to jobsite safety requirements and is recommended for all
industrial and construction workers. Billfold card from Department of
Labor is issued.
OSHA§ 1926.454 Training Requirements.
This section supplements and clarifies the
requirements of § 1926.21(b)(2) as these relate to the hazards of work
on scaffolds.
(a) The employer shall have each employee who
performs work while on a scaffold trained by a person qualified in the
subject matter to recognize the hazards associated with the type of
scaffold being used and to understand the procedures to control or
minimize those hazards. The training shall include the following areas,
as applicable:
(1) The nature of any electrical hazards,
fall hazards and falling object hazards in the work area;
(2) The correct procedures for dealing with
electrical hazards and for erecting, maintaining, and disassembling the
fall protection systems and falling object protection systems being
used;
(3) The proper use of the scaffold, and the
proper handling of materials on the scaffold;
(4) The maximum intended load and the
load-carrying capacities of the scaffolds used; and
(5) Any other pertinent requirements of
this subpart.
(b) The employer shall have each employee who
is involved in erecting, disassembling, moving, operating, repairing,
maintaining, or inspecting a scaffold trained by a competent person to
recognize any hazards associated with the work in question. The training
shall include the following topics, as applicable:
(1) The nature of scaffold hazards;
(2) The correct procedures for erecting,
disassembling, moving, operating, repairing, inspecting, and maintaining
the type of scaffold in question;
(3) The design criteria, maximum intended
load-carrying capacity and intended use of the scaffold;
(4) Any other pertinent requirements of
this subpart.
(c) When the employer has reason to believe
that an employee lacks the skill or understanding needed for safe work
involving the erection, use or dismantling of scaffolds, the employer
shall retrain each such employee so that the requisite proficiency is
regained. Retraining is required in at least the following situations:
(1) Where changes at the worksite present a
hazard about which an employee has not been previously trained; or
(2) Where changes in the types of
scaffolds, fall protection, falling object protection, or other
equipment present a hazard about which an employee has not been
previously trained; or
(3) Where inadequacies in an affected
employee’s work involving scaffolds indicate that the employee has not
retained the requisite proficiency.
