The heart of our program is a complete training manual (340 pages) laid out in a competency-based training format in accordance with standard government accepted specifications for training materials. This learning guide contains an introduction with the terminal objective of obtaining a thorough knowledge of the OSHA scaffolding standard. Nine separate enabling objective and information sheet sections help the student reach the terminal objective. Knowledge checks at the end of each section ensure that the student received and understood the information. A final knowledge check covers the entire course.

The great advantage of this training manual is the fact that so many pictures and graphics are included. In order to develop the training manuals and accompanying videos, we actually erected all three types of scaffolding. We took hundreds of photos during the assembly procedure and placed them in the manual. We built both simple one section high towers, and complex four tier multiple bay scaffolds. These scaffolds demonstrate applications such as: putlogs used to span obstructions, suspended "dead legs", staircases, highly uneven ground conditions, and other unusual field situations.

As a result, the manual contains step by step assembly instructions complete with step by step pictures. For example, if the written instruction says "attach the cross braces to the frame", a picture showing cross braces being attached to the frame is placed adjacent to that instruction on the page. We incorporated the philosophy: "A picture is worth a thousand words" into our program.

But we did not stop with the manual. As professional erectors built these scaffolds, we also filmed live video footage. These videos are an excellent audio visual aid to the learning package. The participant can watch a crew of professional erectors assemble the scaffold live on video, and follow along with the same pictures and instructions in the manual. The video also includes segments of our instructors giving live directions for use of the video in conjunction with the manual.

This linkage of the videos, the manual, and the pictures in the manual provides a complete multi-media training experience. The Scaffold Training Institute is the first to develop such an interlined multi-media training program. It far exceeds the traditional format of showing an independent video and covering text-only regulations in a handout.

As the manual and videos progress step by step through the assembly procedure, topics such as pre-job planning, component identification, equipment inspection, adequate foundations, proper planking, scaffold tie-ins, diagonal bracing, platforms loading, safe use, and others, are discussed in the sequence in which they arise. After taking the participant though the step by step assembly procedures in the manual and on video, a thorough scaffolding inspection checklist is covered. Specific user instructions are also included.

A complete instructor guide is included for "in-house" trainers. This guide provides hour by hour instructions conducting the course in a classroom setting.
